A common question is what type of NH guided rock climbing do you do, is your work with beginning or experience climbers?
During the past 20 years I have guided full time in the New Hampshire mountains on rock climbs, ice climbs, mountain ascents. My work as a mountain guide is extremely varied with a variety of guests who each bring a different level of comfort and experience. This variety makes my work so interesting and fun. I love my outdoor office and going to work. Whether its meeting new people or getting together with long time guests I enjoy giving a guided tour into the vertical world. Its a pleasure being able to display my passion to guests at my favorite climbing areas in New England and around the country.
Cannon Cliff located high above the valley floor of Franconia Notch NH has been my long time favorite climbing area. My early visits started in 1980 and this wild cliff has put a spark in each of my climbing days since then. I certainly enjoy each day guiding the classic NH rock climbs Cannon has to offer along with the occasional day on one of the areas seldom travels routes.
Thanks to John and Chris for the 5am pre dawn wake up. This early start lead to our success on the Whitney Gilman Ridge – the rains came at noon just as we arrived back at the cars. This day came together for John and Chris, their first time climbing high, on an exposed ridge with tough challenges along the way.
Across the road from Cannon is a climbing crag called Echo Cliffs. Elena and Matt joined me for a NH guided rock climbing day sampling the fine single pitch crack and face climbs. This is a perfect area for guests who want to experience a mellow day on the rocks. At the same time the new experience and heights gained on the climbs opens up the mind to future possibilities.
My introductory school teaches the safety skills needed to rock climb. Elana learns the simple and elegant figure of eight tie in knot while Matt first learned, then has ample practice providing a proper belay to Elana.
A successful outing as Elana reached many new heights today.
Jesse and Kim entered a new world on the big cliff. Today this Whitney Gilman rock climb climb would push both of them beyond their comfort zone. This climb is wild, exposed and challenging. One of my favorites in the area to share with visiting guests.
If you look carefully you can pick out Jesse and Kim at the last belay perch on the climb.
As you can see my work is quite varied. Each NH guided rock climbing day is full of adventure and challenges for both the guests and myself. Both ultimately lead to a feeling of success for the mind and body.
