The fall season is well upon us in all areas around the country. It is as climbers say “The Prime Time to Climb”. Many AMGA Rock Guides and climbers travel here to extend the rock season, the Red Rock Conservation area is the perfect place to be. This rock climbing area is extensive, loaded with a variety of excellent multi pitch, sport, and boulders to climb.
The early morning approaches are my personal favorite times in the desert. The views are absolutely stunning in all directions. This photo was taken from the loop road as we approach our climb in the Pine Creek area.
This season Alex of Mooney Mountain Guides joined me for a week of personal climbing and AMGA guide training. The Red Rock is the place for apprentice and aspirant guides to train up and fulfill their resumes in preparation for the Rock Guide Certification exam.
Above Alex is guiding another AMGA Instructor and myself on one of the classic long routes. Slot Machine to Chasing Shadows to Dark Shadows, a link up of over 9 pitches which equals 1000 feet of sandstone climbing.
Alex climbing the brilliant technical face climb called Risky Business. A 4 pitch climb that weaves is way on a steep shield of chocolate colored solid featured sandstone.
AMGA Rock Guides in action
It is here at the belay station that the AMGA rock guide puts technical skills to the test. The first picture has a twist problem with the blue rope that must be fixed before leaving. The second photo may look confusing but actually the anchor and attachments are very organized and ready for each climber to exit.
High above the valley floor is this crux pitch of Black Orpheus. An awesome location for AMGA Rock Guide Brent to demonstrate and coach the climbing movement up this sheer and blank section of the rock.
AMGA Rock Guides Erica and Karen manage all the details of a tricky hanging belay stance.
Tino pictured above climbing Overhanging Hangover on the Black Velvet Wall – technical face and crack climbs galore.
This wall is renowned for its excellent, testy face and crack routes. Folks travel from distance places with sights set for the multi pitch routes here. Prince of Darkness, Dream of Wild Turkeys, Epinephrine are just a few of the elegant lines that grace this wall.
The Red Rock is a huge maze with thousands of climbs in each direction. We are viewing the tallest formation Mt Wilson.
Red Rock is a personal favorite rock climbing area of mine. Of course there are others but I keep coming back here year after year. Its a combination of the weather, easy travel, varied climbing, and always the many friends and guides I meet up with.
